Church comes of age …….

Monday 7th November 2011 was a very important date in the history of the parish of St Martin on the Hill, Scarborough . Exactly 150 years ago the ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone took place.

To mark the occasion there was a service of commemoration on Sunday 6th November led by the Bishop of Hull. In that service Mary Craven, the generous benefactor of the building and George Frederick Bodley, it’s architect were remembered.

Mary Craven, was also the benefactor for St. Michael’s church, the daughter church of St. Martin ’s and it was good to see some many members from St. Michael’s present too. The service was then followed by a lunch for parishioners from both churches.

In conjunction with the anniversary, the parish flower arrangers have put together a mini exhibition entitled “Yesterday & Today” of flowers and vestments. The display is on show every morning until next weekend.

So the parish looks forward two year hence to July 11th 2013, the 150th Anniversary of the dedication of the church …. Look out for a series of events to commemorate that milestone!
